Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)

TMJ, standing for temporomandibular joint refers to the two joints that connect the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull (temporal bone) on either side of the head, in front of the ears.

Temporomandibular joint disorders, often referred to as TMJ issues are a group of conditions that affect the TMJ and the muscles and nerves around it.

Causes of TMJ can range anywhere from stress, bruxism (teeth grinding), misaligned bite, trauma to the jaw and arthritis.

Symptoms can include but are not limited to pain in the jaw or face, stiffness or clicking in the jaw, headaches, earaches and difficulty opening or closing the mouth.

At Dental Associates at Pitman we can evaluate each individual case of TMJ disorder and try to determine the best, most non-invasive course of action to bring relief of symptoms.

This may include over the counter pain relievers, occlusal (bite) guards, muscle relaxers, compresses and physical therapy. For more information, please call our office at (856) 589-3803.
