How Teeth Whitening Works
Professional whitening products contain either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide as the active whitening ingredient. Effective results in whitening are driven by length of wear time and concentrations of active ingredients in the formula. The higher the concentration of the active ingredient, the higher the likelihood of sensitivity. That’s why highly sensitive patients should start with a lower concentration of bleaching agent.
Whitening your teeth once will also not keep your teeth white forever. Whitening is a lifelong process. There are many causes of tooth discoloration. Some of the most common include the consumption of highly colored foods and drinks (berries, coffee, tea, red wine). Some medications, aging, smoking and trauma can also cause teeth discoloration.
